Flower Names

Mother's Day is right around the corner and for flower lovers it is a fun time to pick out flowers for our mothers that truly express the message we are trying to convey. There are popular, or should I say, more commonly bought flowers that are given to mothers on Mother's Day. Carnations, tulips, and roses are just a few of them. However, just because they are common does not mean you are bound by having a floral arrangement just like everyone else's nor are you bound to just sending flowers on Mother's Day; any day, week, or month of the year is a great day to express your love and gratitude to your mother. The name of a flower and color can help you express just that.

Numbers with flowers do not necessarily convey a stronger message although in some cases it can speak volumes. With a single flower, you can express to the receiver that you think they are considerate and thoughtful, yet a single long stem red rose can express love and affection. Therefore, it is not necessary that numbers bind you either. Giving someone three flowers is to reflect respect, whereas five flowers show affection, and seven express love. Yet, once again, a single long stemmed red rose can also express love.

The color of a flower can express deep feelings as well with a white carnation expressing pure love where a red carnation expresses deep love and affection. Capriciousness means one has a tendency to make quick unexpected changes and is people who are often fickle, unpredictable, or unreliable, yet the word capriciousness is what purple carnations are to indicate. Yet, in France, purple carnations adorn casket as a tradition of showing condolence. Would I personally allow that to stop me from sending my mother on Mother's Day a floral arrangement full of purple carnations when I know she loves them; no. However, it is interesting to know how certain flowers are represented.

If you don't want to risk conveying the wrong message on Mother's Day through the Mother's Day flowers you send to her, you may want to play it safe and send tulips, roses, white carnations, orchid and lilies. However, you may want to stay clear of the asters as they are to represent an afterthought, yellow carnation (indifferences, disappointment, rejection, and disdain), marigolds (grief), striped carnations (refusal), yellow chrysanthemums (tainted love), or orange lilies as they are to represent hatred. If your mom is not a buff in the meanings behind flowers or if she just likes a particular flower or color regardless of meaning, I suggest just go with your heart. In the end, it will be the love that shines through in the flowers that you send to your mother on Mother's Day, and that is all that will matter.
